I'm glad to hear that it's been discussed. Tradeoffs are inevitable and
priorities must be set. I definitely understand.
Such a project might be non-trivial, but I think it might be a nicely
partitioned project for anyone motivated and with the time to attempt
it. Unlike some other projects (exclusive locks come immediately to
mind, or an SQL backend even more so), it's not so enmeshed with the
project that it would need significant core developer attention.
